Group therapy can consist of two people (dyad), three people (triad), or a larger group of 4-6 people. Group therapy is most appropriate to address social skills problems, because it allows the individual to more realistically experience situations that present problems, get feedback from others regarding the role they are playing in the problem, and have an opportunity to practice more effective strategies to relate to others. It is also comforting to learn that others have similar problems and you are not alone. Furthermore, group members can learn a lot from each other, as well as from the therapist, and often serve as a great source of acceptance and support. Group therapy also has the advantage of being less expensive, since the therapy costs are shared among group members. Every effort is made to match children by age, gender, and issues.
Other types of problems that are well suited to a group format are anger and stress management, divorce, grief, substance abuse, eating disorders, and typical adolescent issues.
